Eagles reportedly declined Browns’ trade offer for Nick Foles

The Browns traded for Tyrod Taylor in mid-March. But, before they dealt for the Bills quarterback, Cleveland attempted to acquire Nick Foles.

The Browns offered Philadelphia the 2018 NFL Draft’s 35th overall pick in exchange for Foles, according to a report from NFL.com. The Eagles reportedly declined the trade after Foles told the team he’d rather stay in Philadelphia.

Foles stepped in as the Eagles’ starter last season after Carson Wentz tore his ACL in mid-December. He threw for 971 yards and six touchdowns in the playoffs.

“I think it’s a unique way to show togetherness, not only for our team but in society today,” Cavs forward Jeff Green said. “For me, I take it as more than us … especially when you’re dealing with a lot of different backgrounds like we have.”

To Green’s point, the Cavs’ melting pot consists of mostly black players, but there are also white players in Kevin Love and Kyle Korver, the aforementioned Calderon, who is Spanish, Clarkson, who is half-Filipino, Cedi Osman, who is Turkish, and Ante Zizic, who is Croatian.

Boston registered 79 total tackles and five interceptions for the Chargers last season. He was originally picked in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Panthers and spent three seasons in Carolina.

The Colts finished 2017 with a 4-12 record and missed the playoffs for the third straight year in part to a dismal secondary. They fired coach Chuck Pagano and replaced him with former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich in the offseason.

Indianapolis is expecting quarterback Andrew Luck, who missed all of last season with a shoulder injury, to be ready to the start season.

Guzman has tiebreaking hit, Gallo homers, Rangers beat Jays

Ronald Guzman hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the sixth inning, and the Texas Rangers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-4 on Friday night.

Joey Gallo homered and scored twice and Nomar Mazara had three hits and two RBI as the Rangers won back-to-back games for the second time this season. Texas, which beat Oakland 4-2 on Wednesday, won consecutive 10-inning games at Houston on April 14 and 15.

Guzman broke a 4-4 tie with a single to left off Marcus Stroman (0-3), driving in Gallo and Mazara.

Steve Pearce hit a two-run double in the second, and Toronto tied it when Pillar tripled in the third on a broken-bat hit that bounced over Gallo’s head in left.

Stroman lost his left shoe as he broke to cover first on Jurickson Profar’s grounder in the third, but didn’t break stride and recorded the out.

Rangers: C Robinson Chirinos (left wrist) sat for the second straight game but is expected to return to the lineup Saturday and Sunday. The Rangers were off Thursday, meaning Chirinos will have had three days of rest once he returns. … Texas activated RHP Tony Barnette (back) off the 10-day disabled list and optioned RHP Jose Leclerc to Triple-A Round Rock.

Blue Jays: 3B Josh Donaldson threw to the bases Friday at Toronto’s spring training facility in Florida. No date has been set for Donaldson to begin a rehab assignment. … RHP John Axford was reinstated from the bereavement list and LHP Tim Mayza was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.

The Atlanta Hawks and coach Mike Budenholzer have mutually agreed to part ways.

Budenholzer, the 2014-15 NBA Coach of the Year, and the organization finalized terms of a split Wednesday night.

“I am grateful for the five years that I spent as coach of the Atlanta Hawks and will always cherish the incredible contributions, commitment and accomplishments of the players that I was fortunate enough to work with here,” Budenholzer told ESPN on Wednesday night. “From ownership to management, support staff to the community, I’ll look back with great pride on what we were able to achieve together with the Hawks.”

Considered one of the NBA’s best tacticians, Budenholzer also had been the Hawks’ president of basketball operations — until surrendering front-office control with the arrival of Schlenk in the spring of 2017.

Budenholzer earned his Coach of the Year honors after a 60-victory regular season with the Hawks and a trip to the 2015 Eastern Conference finals. The Hawks reached the playoffs in four of his first five seasons. Atlanta dropped to 24-58 this season, with the organization’s mandate to shed salary and gather draft picks and future assets.

He compiled a 230-219 overall record, which included a 17-22 postseason mark.sl_cardinals_048

Arthur Blank: “No need to worry” about Matt Ryan extension

Falcons owner Arthur Blank is about to write a very large check to Matt Ryan. But it’s worth remembering that Blank also receives many much larger checks, so perhaps that’s why he’s so calm.

Blank told Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he wasn’t panicked at all about the pace of the negotiations with the former MVP quarterback.

The end result is Kidd-Gilchrist standing around the perimeter, scrounging on cuts, offensive boards, and manic transition sprints. No one guards him.

That does not make Kidd-Gilchrist useless. The Hornets have generally played better, even on offense, with Kidd-Gilchrist on the floor. He is a plus defender across four positions, even if he hasn’t developed into the unshakeable stopper we all envisioned. He has hit 47 percent of shots between 10 and 16 feet from the hoop, a solid number.

But those shots aren’t worth enough to matter. The damage Kidd-Gilchrist inflicts on Charlotte’s spacing — and his presence as a safe hiding spot for sieves — outweighs the occasional midrange swish and all his expert mooching. He would be a more interesting player if Charlotte gave him a little added on-ball responsibility — even some touches at the elbow.

Butler told Sports Illustrated that he wanted to ask Belichick or defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to explain why, after playing every snap of the AFC Championship Game, he didn’t play a single snap on defense in the Super Bowl.

“There was times when I was on the sideline and I just wanted to go up and say to Belichick or Matt Patricia and just say, ‘Is this how we’re gonna end this?’ I grew up in the Patriots system and I’m a man of God. I respect my authority and I just couldn’t ask them for something they didn’t want to do. I just was doing my job. I was close to going up there and saying what I wanted to say to Matt or Belichick, but I just stayed in my lane and just did my job. And I really wanted to go ask him, but I didn’t,” Butler said.bills_054

Back injury sends Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo to disabled list

The Chicago Cubs have placed first baseman Anthony Rizzo on the 10-day disabled list with a back injury.

The move is retroactive to last Friday as Rizzo has missed the team’s past three games and was slated to miss Monday’s home opener before it was snowed out.

The 28-year-old began experiencing tightness in the area going back to last Monday in Cincinnati. He played through the pain on Thursday before missing the next three games against Milwaukee.

Jamal Murray added 19 points and Wilson Chandler 13 for the Nuggets, who shot their second-best shooting percent (62.4) of the season.

“When the ball is moving around like it was tonight, and you’re able to shoot 62 percent, guys definitely made shots, but we passed up good shots to get great shots,” Malone said. “The offense was obviously firing on all cylinders tonight.”

Lou Williams scored 24 points to lead the Clippers. DeAndre Jordan added 16 points and 17 rebounds, with Tyrone Wallace added 18 points and Tobias Harris had 16 for Los Angeles.

Leading 81-71, Barton hit a 3-pointer after the Nuggets grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds to ignite a 12-3 run that finished with Harris making the score 93-74 with 3:09 to play.

Orioles: 1B Chris Davis didn’t play. He hasn’t been feeling well and hasn’t slept much, Showalter said.

Yankees: Didi Gregorius didn’t start for the first time this season. He got jarred on a headfirst slide home Friday night and is “a little beat up,” manager Aaron Boone said. Gregorius pinch-hit and stayed in at shortstop. He got a gift double in the 10th when CF Adam Jones lost his routine flyball in the sun. … C Gary Sanchez (leg cramp) got a second day off in a row.

Orioles: Return home to play Toronto on Monday. RHP Dylan Bundy has pitched well in two starts, getting no-decisions vs. Minnesota andbuccaneers_077 Houston. He’s allowed just one run in 13 innings, striking out 15.

Broncos acquire T Jared Veldheer from Cardinals for 6th-round pick

The Broncos have acquired offensive tackle Jared Veldheer from the Cardinals for a sixth-round pick, the teams announced Friday.

According to the Denver Post, the Broncos plan to use Veldheer at right tackle and 2017 first-round pick Garrett Bolles on the left side which means they will move Ron Leary to left guard.

Veldheer was a third-round pick by the Raiders in 2010 out of Hillsdale. He then became a free agent and signed a five-year, $35 million deal with the Cardinals in 2014.

“We can’t anticipate them helping us,” Devin Harris said. “We dug ourselves into this hole; we’ve got to dig ourselves out.”

“We wouldn’t want it any other way,” said Gary Harris, who returned from an 11-game absence with 12 points. “If we win we’re in.”

Trail Blazers: Play Utah at home Wednesday night in their regular season finale.

Nuggets: Can end their playoff drought with a win at Minnesota on Wednesday night.

Logan, 28, will provide defensive line depth and become a top contender to start at nose tackle. The Titans needed more talent at the position following the releases of Karl Klug and Sylvester Williams earlier this offseason.

The move comes after the Titans missed out on signing Ndamukong Suh, who signed with the Los Angeles Rams after visiting Tennessee.

Logan, whose best strength is his run-stuffing ability, will add to a strong Titans run defense that finished fourth in 2017. He ranks ninth among defensive lineman over the last five years with 31 tackles for loss on rushing attempts, according to Stats LLC.

Logan joined the Kansas City Chiefs as an unrestricted free agent last year after four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He played in 15 games, plus the playoff loss to the Titans, starting in 13 of them.buccaneers_018

Raiders cut Marquette King; should Eagles pursue the All-Pro

As the Eagles’ roster currently stands, the team is set with starters across the board. That is, except at one position.

In 2017, King averaged 47.4 yards per punt (7th in the NFL) with 29 punts falling inside the 20-yard line. By comparison, Jones averaged 45.3 yards per punt with 23 punts landing inside the 20. According to Pro Football Focus’ grading system, King was the third-highest rated punter in the NFL last season.

Now, the Eagles aren’t exactly flush with salary cap space. The latest NFL PA report has the Eagles currently possessing $2.62 million in cap space. King was set to earn $3.05 million this season from the Raiders, though he’d unlikely earn that much on the open market.

It is unlikely Eagles general manager would want to pay a premium for a punter, though it’s at least a conversation worth having.

The only other punter currently on the roster is Cameron Johnston, an Ohio State alum who the Eagles signed to a reserve/futures contract in January. He spent the pre-season with the Eagles last season but has no NFL experience otherwise.

Stanton became the first Yankee to homer in his first at-bat with the team since Judge and Tyler Austin, who started at first base Thursday, did it on Aug. 13, 2016. He was the first player to homer on Opening Day in his first season with the Yankees since Raul Ibanez in 2012, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

After flying out in the third inning, Stanton ripped a fifth-inning double to left-center that brought home Judge, who had walked, to make it 3-0 Yankees. Sanchez immediately responded with a double of his own to the same part of the park, scoring Stanton and it was 4-zip.

Take the Rooney Rule, and how it was applied in the Oakland Raiders’ hiring of Jon Gruden. The Raiders seemingly violated the rule by interviewing the minority candidates after team owner Mark Davis reached an agreement for Gruden to return, yet the league’s investigation found no violation.

Call it another layer of confusion that the rule wasn’t enforced.patriots_090-223x223

Report: Ravens’ $29M agreement with Grant voided after failed physical

The Baltimore Ravens’ agreement with Ryan Grant has been voided after the free-agent wideout failed a physical, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Grant agreed to a four-year, $29-million deal, but will now venture back into the free-agent market to try to find a team willing to pass him on his physical, added Schefter. The specifics of Grant’s health issue are unknown. The Ravens reportedly moved quickly to find a replacement, organizing a visit with the recently-released Michael Crabtree.

In the statement, the four leaders said they shared the view of British investigators that “there is no plausible alternative explanation” for the attack. They added that “Russia’s failure to address the legitimate request by the U.K. government further underlines its responsibility.”

“Actually, this is not even a baby step,” Bergmann amended. “This is a mirage to make it look like they have implemented sanctions.”

Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) commended the sanctions announcement, but like other lawmakers he urged the administration to go further.

“Russia’s continued attempts to undermine international order and to create destabilizing conditions must fail,” Banks said. “I will continue to support the robust use of all elements of U.S. national power to counter Russian aggression.”

Tom Benson’s contributions to New Orleans and the National Football League were legendary. He purchased a team that had never had a winning season; by the third year of his ownership, the Saints were in the playoffs, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said.

Tom kept the Saints together through the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, and his decision to bring the team back to New Orleans gave the entire region hope and confidence that they would recover. The Saints rewarded their fans with tremendous football and a Super Bowl championship.

Tom loved New Orleans, where he was a generous and caring philanthropist. Within the NFL, he was a true leader among NFL owners. He served as the chairman of the League’s Finance Committee for many years, was a key advisor to my predecessors, and was someone whom I frequently turned to since becoming Commissioner. I know that the entire NFL family joins me in extending our most heartfelt condolences to Gayle Benson and the entire Saints organization.canucks_002

Rays’ Kevin Cash ‘not going to five’ pitchers for 2018 season

While other teams are pondering using six-man pitching rotations this season, Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash is going with the opposite mindset and is planning to use a four-man rotation throughout the 2018 season.

Under Cash’s plan, four pitchers will still work on regular rest, but instead of going with a regular starter on every fifth day, Cash said it will be a bullpen day and he’ll have three or four relief pitchers go through the batting order once.

“It’s not part of baseball,” Hamels said March 3. “I know that’s the new analytical side of trying to reinvent the wheel, but I was brought up in the minor leagues on the five-man [rotation], and that’s what I’m designed and conditioned for.

The Los Angeles Angels also have discussed using a six-man rotation, while the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs tried it in 2017.

“We don’t discuss family politics or family issues, but he’s part of this family,” general manager Mike Rizzo said Tuesday. “Actions beget consequences. No player is bigger than the organization.”

Romero, a left-handed pitcher out of the University of Houston, was a first-round pick last summer. Although some considered him a top-10 talent, he was selected 25th overall after a tumultuous junior year with the Cougars.

Romero, 21, was suspended for the first two weeks of the 2017 season for conduct detrimental to the team. He was later suspended again, with the Houston Chronicle reporting the suspension stemmed from a failed drug test. A third incident in May 2017 led to his dismissal from the Houston program.

Romero, who was recently ranked as Washington’s fourth-best prospect by ESPN’s Keith Law, pitched to a 5.40 ERA in six appearances with the Nationals’ low-A affiliate last season, tallying 32 strikeouts in 20 innings.

“Hopefully when he gets back here he’ll be better for it,” Rizzo said.

Lightning looking to add to league-leading road win total

The Tampa Bay Lightning, in first place in the NHL, will be looking for their league-leading 22nd road win Saturday night when they visit the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.

The Lightning (41-17-3) picked up their 21st road win of the season Thursday with a 4-3 win in Ottawa against the Senators, and will be out to match their franchise record for road wins against the Canadiens.

The Lightning had a franchise-record 22 road wins in 2003-04 and 2006-07.

Sources have described the confrontation as “heated,” noting the need for others in the practice gym to get between them during the argument. Noah left the team following the confrontation. The team initially said he exited for personal reasons and later said they mutually agreed that the veteran center would not return to the team until further notice.

Asked Tuesday if his run-in with Noah in late January would prevent the 33-year-old from returning to the team, Hornacek said, “No.”

The post-Super Bowl spot is typically a rub television networks give to their most promising programs. It’s been used to showcase stellar series like The Simpsons, The X-Files, and The Office in the past in an attempt to leech viewers from the most-watched broadcast of the year.

On Sunday, that honor will go to NBC drama This Is Us, which stars teen pop sensation Mandy Moore and former Saved by the Bell: The New Class guest star Milo Ventimiglia. The show has emerged as a hit with both critics and audiences, standing above the rest of a crop of unmemorable offerings that have failed to recapture the “Must See TV” mantel of NBC’s past. In two seasons, it’s been nominated for 10 Emmys and six Golden Globes. Sterling K. Brown has one of each award for best actor in a TV drama for his show-stealing performance as Randall.

Just weeks ago, the show also won a Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series.jays_595_6db821875c64c9f8-180x180

Will the Super Bowl be broadcast in 4K?

According to the NFL, since McCarron was on the non-football injury list during his rookie season, he won’t be eligible to be an unrestricted free agent. However, McCarron said he was upfront about his medical history coming out of college (where it is assumed he sustained the shoulder injury that kept him out most of his rookie year) and that the Bengals shouldn’t have been placed him on the NFI.

The Bengals have until March 15 to tender McCarron as a restricted free agent.

The two successful coordinators will have to fight history in order to prove Bill Belichick’s coaching tree can bear fruit. Patriot assistants have typically been unsuccessful after being promoted to lead their own franchises. Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weis, Eric Mangini, Bill O’Brien, and McDaniels have combined for a 98-152 record as head coaches — a win rate that doesn’t even hit 40 percent.

It was around midfield and even Cris Collinsworth was unsure of the idea. The Foles catch was not only brilliant, it acts as an entry point to Pederson’s tactics for the game, his philosophy for the whole season, and his unrelenting trust in his players.

While outdoor Super Bowls are becoming increasingly rare, they’re certainly not unheard of. Since the Patriots’ era of dominance began in the 2001 season, seven of the games were played outdoors. One included the Patriots; the rest have not.

As for the future sites currently announced, only one (Raymond James Stadium, home of the Buccaneers) is indoors. Assuming the broadcast rotation doesn’t change, here’s how the next four shake out.

Ottawa had a number of chances to try and close the gap, but couldn’t beat Domingue.

Tampa Bay made it 4-1 with less than a second left in the second period when Point was left all alone in front and scored his 24th of the season.bears_088-223x223
